About me

Hello, I am a Civil Engineer (licensed P.E. in California), living in Oakland, CA. I am an environmental professional with experience in civil and environmental engineering, permaculture, green building and sustainable energy. I am involved in design and installation of green infrastructure projects including graywater and rainwater catchment systems, bioswales, rain gardens, living roofs and floating treatment wetlands.

I am working with Hyphae Design Laboratory in Oakland, CA and I am interested in bringing in new projects. I am also looking for applications to utilize BioHaven Floating Islands for improving water quality both in natural and process environments, for creating floating wildlife platforms, and for wave attenuation and bank stabilization.

My main groups on WiserEarth are:

Northern California American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association

Graywater Solutions

Green Infrastructure – Low Impact Development Solutions

I have the following certifications:

– American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association Accredited Professional. (ARCSA-AP) http://www.arcsa.org/

– Green Roof Accredited Professional (GRP) through Green Roofs for Healthy Cities http://www.greenroofs.org/

– Accredited Greywater Installer through Greywater Action http://greywateraction.org/

– Completed a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) with Darren Doherty at Quail Springs, October 2007 http://www.permaculture.biz/

I am fortunate to have worked with many great teachers in the areas of sustainability and permaculture including: Darren Doherty, Kat Steele, Benjamin Fahrer, Brock Dolman, Mark Lakeman, Lydia Doleman, Rico Zook and many others.

I have the following international experience in water resources, sustainable technologies and permaculture.

– Two years as a Water/Sanitation Engineer in the Peace Corps in Catacamas, Olancho, Honduras. I designed and constructed gravity flow water supply systems for small rural communities. I also did delineation and education for watershed protection.

– Volunteer work at Sadhana Forest, Auroville, Tamil Nadu, India. Work included earthworks and greywater.

– South India Permaculture Tour led by Rico Zook. Sites included: Bangalore, Mysore, Udupi, Kannur and Hampi. Work included greywater installations, earthworks, checkdams, and creation of a wetland for habitat restoration.
– Girasol Natural Building Ecovillage project, with Martin Schulke, Mark Lakeman and Lydia Doleman at the Girasol site in Valle de Las Palmas, Baja California Norte, Mexico.

I have lived, worked and traveled extensively. Here is a map!

It really enjoyed reading about the fantastic work you are doing on sustainable water solutions today. Thank you for all the postings (especially the events) you’ve added to WiserEarth. Thank you for being such an amazing member of our community.

Wow, you live so close and have so much to contribute to the Transition movement. Noted your wiki page on our Transition Mill Valley initiating group page…. would love to communicate more directly. Do you give talks? Are you aware of the current MMWD desalination plant brouhaha? We are really interested (Transition Mill Valley and Transition Towns Marin) in connecting with resources for taking permaculture courses, rainwater harvesting …. are you involved with transition in the east bay?

Hi Eric–I’m still figuring out how to use this website to communicate–hope this reaches you. Have you had any luck in recruiting interest for a table at the Water Conservation Showcase? Maybe this year we should just get as many people as possible to attend to learn what’s out there, and hope to have a critical mass for a booth next year?
