About
SUMMARY: The overarching theme of all my work is problem solving. My research focus is computational ethnobiology. I am currently studying natural glycosides, secondary metabolites such as the saponins (mostly terpenoid glycosides and steroid glycosides). Independent of that effort, I am also developing a generic visualization technology.
Hmmm, what else describes me? A sickly child... An animated filmmaker... A geometer... A late bloomer... A hacktivist (in the best sense of the word)... A computer scientist... An applied mathematician... An ex-pharma Jock... A techno termite... A solutionist...
Looking back, I see that I have frequently woven together art and science. Coincidentally, my mother is an Armenian fiber artist and my father was an Irish high-energy astrophysicist.
I'll have you know that I gave the gift of life in 2002. When my sister Jennifer needed a liver, I donated half of mine. Kudos to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for partially funding the live donor liver transplantation. Did I mention that I also used to be a U.S. government drug tester? The NIH couldn't find many normal volunteers willing to be injected with over a gram of the HIV envelope surface glycoprotein as expressed by a freaky chimeric moth!
SPECIALTIES: Patience. Creativity. Attention to detail.
DIRECTIVES: Stay tuned -- I am coming out of my medical hiatus this month (September).
THE LATEST NEWS: I recently filed a constellation of local and federal government forms so as to be on the path to creating a 501(c)(3) nonprofit consistent with achieving my long term goals. I can report that Pedro A. Cortés, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, has certified the incorporation of Prescience Trust Funds under the Nonprofit Corporation Law of 1988, and that I am preparing the subsequent and lengthy IRS Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Prescience Trust Funds has been described as follows: "A charitable, educational, and scientific organization devoted to the minimization of information asymmetries in the ethnobiological sciences as well as the promotion and development of materials and methods for truly open science." My hope is that this NGO will facilitate change to the extent that I am able.

Doug,
It was a pleasure meeting you, especially after having read your profile! Thank you for being a part of the thinking and planning of the OSN proejct. We need thinkers and problem solvers like you on the team, and from what I understand you're the best.
I look forward to working and learning with you as this adventure unfolds.
Best, Pat
