About

My name is Thomas I. ("Tom") Ellis. I am a professor of English at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, Virginia, though I live across the water in Hampton, Virginia. I am a lifelong environmentalist, a life-member of the Sierra Club and state secretary of its Virginia Chapter, and an avid gardener. But I have always preferred the word "Gaian" to "environmentalist" as a self-description: I define a Gaian as a conscious inhabitant, and loyal and dedicated citizen, of Gaia, the only living planet we will ever know. So in effect, everyone here on the WiserEarth network is, ipso facto, a fellow Gaian.
As a Gaian, I take to heart a slogan I have adopted from one of my historical icons, Thomas Paine: "The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion."
I am interested in all environmental issues and in all aspects of enviromental education--it is by far the most important thing in our world today, especially for the younger generations. I am particularly interested these days in permaculture as a comprehensive design model, a plan of action for something concrete that each of us can do, starting in our own homes and backyards, to heal and transform our planet from the ground up--first in our gardens, then in our neighborhoods, then in our cities, regions, states, nation, and world.
As activist and visionary Norman Myers once said, "We have two choices: a Gaian future, or no future."

Hi Thomas
I liked the Norman Myers quote on your profile so much I put it on my profile!
