Students will explore and discover small efforts they may begin to take that will help them impove the health of our immediate area, reduce their material consumption, and renew a simpler lifestyle.

The High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew is about:

1. Our Mission Statement:
To empower volunteers to serve the needs of the forest and the community

2. Our Vision Statement:
We will become a nationally recognized volunteer organization focused on maintaining the health and accessibility of our public lands. We will engage the community in a culture of belonging and respect while providing an exceptional volunteer experience at no charge.

3. Our Goals Statement

1.      Promote public awareness of the needs of the forest in the following ways:

·        Outreach presentations to other organizations and public agencies

·        Brochures and signage

·        Provide media packets to newspapers, magazines, radio and television

·        Network through attendance at other community organization meetings

 

2.      Encourage productive partnership between public land mangers (PLM’s) and volunteer organizations by:

·        Providing a positive and professional role model for other organizations

·        Offering mentoring and training opportunities for other organizations

 

3.      Consistently broaden the range of volunteer opportunities we offer in the following ways:

·        Partner with a wide range of PLM’s including botanists, hydrologists, etc.

·        Train crew leaders and volunteers in skills relevant to the needs presented by the PLM’s, such as noxious weeds, sensitive species, monitoring, surveys, TRACS etc.

 

4.      Pursue diverse sources of funding by:

·        Use of multiple angles of the volunteer opportunities that we offer to develop new sources of funding

·        Employing a variety of fund raising strategies, such as special events; direct ask, member donations, etc.

·        Presentation of professional proposals that include professional financial documents.

 

5.      Create a culture of belonging and respect through:

·        Healthy communication with others

·        Providing a non-political, non-religious environment

·        Excluding no person or group of people

·        Learning to become a culturally diverse, culturally sensitive environment

·        Welcoming all

 

6.      Partner with community organizations such as:

·        Youth services providers

·        Under-served groups

·        Educational institutions

·        Health services providers

·        Other volunteer organizations

·        Outdoor groups, etc.

 

7.      Create an exceptional volunteer experience through:

·        A well trained staff and skilled leadership

·        A safe and supportive work environment

·        Balanced and nutritionally responsible meals

·        Ethnically diverse meals

·        Maintaining high work standards

·        Offering a broad range of actives for all skill levels and abilities

·        A welcome committee plus a First Trip “Buddy” System

·        Volunteer satisfaction surveys

·        Policies and procedures to promote well-being of volunteers

·        Reliable and widely accessible trip information

·        Appropriate and well-maintained equipment

 

8.      Continuous improvement of management practices through:

·        Ongoing training

·        Healthy communication

·        Maintaining personal and professional integrity

·        Adopting best management practices

·        Clearly defining areas of responsibility

 

9.      Develop a web site that reflects our organization by making it:

·        A destination web site that includes partner links

·        User friendly

·        A source for training, safety information and trip information

·        Having a functional, professional Board of Directors

·        Having working committees with defined areas of responsibilities

·        Performing as promised
