He received his M.S. in Industrial Administration from Purdue University’s Krannert School and his Ph.D. in Business from Stanford University. Professor Silverman teaches in the areas of Business & Society, Strategic Management, and Business & the Natural Environment.

A primary focus of his teaching and research has been the impact of business organizations on the natural environment and what they are doing and can do to become more environmentally sustainable. In 1995, he developed a graduate seminar – Business Management and Environmental Leadership – which he teaches every Spring semester. In 2000, he developed an undergraduate course – The Greening of Business – which is both a General Studies course for all SFSU students and an elective for College of Business students. Dr. Silverman was also on the University committee that developed the Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Degree Program at SFSU. Professor Silverman has published over 20 scholarly articles in journals such as Business, Society & the Environment, Journal of Global Marketing, Electricity Journal, Journal of Transnational Management, Environmental Business Journal, Management Review, Journal of Small Business Management, Legal Economics and the International Journal of Wine Marketing. He is also an avid case writer, having published 10 cases in leading textbooks for use in strategic management, general management, business & society, and environmental management courses.
