Happiness and Well-Being

Can Happiness Be Measured??

I am working on a group project dealing with Gross National Happiness (GNH) and the Happy Planet Index (HPI).  This group will serve to link individuals and organizations with resources relating to global happiness measures.

About

During the last twenty years I have been working on water supply and sanitation in various African countries: Burkina Faso, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and in Europe. Presently I am head of a water department at AEE INTEC, a private research institute, where we develop sustainable water systems. We aim at integrating potable water, rainwater, other water resources, including wastewater, and sanitation into one optimised system. There is some information available at our website where there are also links to websites of projects we were involve in. We have also collected and produced information, e.g. videos on sustainable water systems, which is available for interested persons.

We are presently expanding the integration of water systems to agriculture and urban planning, based on the assumption that our settlements and agricultural activities have to be adapted to a more efficient substance flow management in order to improve water supply and sanitation under growing water scarcity and nutrients problems. This work is also a response to architects’ search for more sustainable buildings, producing energy and water, instead of consuming it. It also takes into consideration that large urban areas, and there mainly slums, are the fastest growing settlement structures.

In this respect it helps that AEE INTEC is host to two other departments, one for thermal solar energy and another for sustainable buildings. We can therefore cover a wide range of aspects of the built environment.

I am married since 1986 to Barbara and we have 4 children who are getting adult one after the other. It's a pleasure to watch and accompany them.

I like all sorts of sports, e.g. backcountry skiing, mountaineering, climbing, ice skating, inline skating, unicycling, swimming, sailing, running, natural track luging, sea and river kayaking, biking. Besides I enjoy reading, listening to music and certainly my work. We have no TV at home.

Hi Martin,

Glad to assist! Regarding your other questions:

1) You can link groups together by having a "Related Groups" module in each. As you create working documents, you can also share the information between them, by granting access privileges (located in the top of each wikipage) to the groups you want to link. So one way to do what you are suggesting would be to restrict access to the document while you are working on it to your private group, then when it is done, to add access privileges to your public group. Does that make sense? Anything you share to the public group will still remain private within the private group (ie. when you go to the private group without being a member, you won't be able to access anything).

2) Yes, there is definitely a way to have a thread of questions. You can actually create your own personal group to use as a workspace, and make it private/invite whoever you want (or make it publicly accessible). Then you can add the Discussion module. Within the module, you and I, or whatever members you wanted to invite, can discuss in an ongoing thread. You can use the Discussion module to have ongoing discussions with multiple people, or just request each person you are wanting to chat with to chat in their own conversation (caveat: currently you can't technically restrict people within the group from commenting on other discussions, but I'm sure if you ask them not to, most will respect that).

Good luck, and feel free to invite me into any such group if you'd like further clarification!

Best,

Kerry

To answer your questions:

- Group wikipages sound like they will work to present your content.

- WiserEarth has private group capability/restricted access. When you are creating your group, you will want to select "only members can view group content" and "only members can edit group content" from the list of options. You can also restrict joins to invitation only.

- You can store photos and text in two ways: within a wikipage (as part of the content), and a file library. Groups have a file library as a separate module, and individual wikipages also have the option of "attaching" a file to them. Both photos and text files can be uploaded in the file library. We don't have a photo album feature at this time.

- The open forum can take place within the discussion modules in your group. You have the option of starting a new discussion, and each person's response appears in a new box below, but included within the same discussion. You can start as many discussions as you like, and they are saved within the module.

- For linking to other sites, you have the opportunity to enter websites within the wikipages as well as in the wikipage content, but let me know if you meant another type of linking!

I hope that helps to start. Let me know if you need more clarification, or if I can help you further on WE!

All best,

Kerry

Hi Martin,

Thanks for inviting me to your network! Looks like you're doing some very important work. Water is so crucial and I have often wondered what the future of its distribution will look like.

Feel free to send me your questions! Look forward to seeing you around WE.

Best,

Kerry

HI Martin - welcome to the Hero Generation site - we just set it up recently with the aim of collaboratively developing the best slide show on sustainability we can possibly pull together. The site is there for people to add ideas and I guess we are specifically after key messages and information relating to sustainability - so please feel free to throw your thougths into the ring.  We want a tool that is easily understood and easy for anyone to access given the gret need to rapdily advance the broader communities understainding our current pickle and the thinking and practice we need to best address it.

Very best wishes

John

Dear Martin, thank you for your statements and questions, for being interested in Tameras´ ecology and solarvillage working groups . We´re glad for interconnecting in future. Barbara Kovats is the very best person to have contact with. In a few days I´ll be back from my short stay in Germany and then will answer you in a longer way.

cordially,

Peter Koll
