About

Aloha,

I am a socially responsible investment advisor and co-owner of Natural Investments LLC, one of the nation's most experienced socially responsible investment firms. Since 1985, we've helped individuals, non-profits and other institutions, and businesses to align their investments with their values.

Our firm has been exclusively devoted to socially responsible investing since 1985, and we have written two books on the topic: Investing From the Heart (Crown, 1992) and Investing With Your Values: Making Money and Making a Difference (Bloomberg, 1999). From 1993-2000, we were the only socially responsible investment firm to be invited by the NY Times to participate in their study starting with $50,000. We came in third place, only .5% off the first place finisher. This demonstrated the competitiveness of socially conscious investing. Since 1992, we have maintained the NI Social Rating (SM) , the only national rating system for socially responsible mutual funds. The Rating examines the breadth and depth of these funds' corporate screens, shareholder activism, community development investing, and social research capacities, and gives them anywhere from 1 to 5 hearts depending on their level of committment to the industry's standards. Visit www.naturalinvesting.com for more information.

As a longtime sustainability (permaculture) teacher and teacher trainer, I have long been committed to helping people to live in harmony with natural systems. To this end, I have founded and directed numerous non-profit organizations, among them Youth Ecology Corps, the Center for Service Learning Opportunities in Education, and Permaculture Drylands Institute. A former National Service Fellow during the Clinton Administration, I have long advocated for a strong public participation and service ethic.

Currently, I founded and direct the Kuleana Green Business Program through the 700-member Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce. The program, the only of its kind in Hawai`i, recognizes local businesses which are committed to socially responsible practices in the areas of employee and customer relations, community involvement, environmental stewardship, and product/service quality. The program features educational seminars, a special logo qualifying businesses can use, and an annual conference and award. Visit www.kona-kohala.com for more information.

I am also a founder and facilitator of the Kona Earth Festival (www.konaearthfestival.org), a month-long series of 15 events designed to promote conscious action to preserve and regenerate the environment.
