About
I am an architect in Seattle, Washington with a focus on the interconnectedness of people, places, form, and ecology.
Sample writing on Environmental Education Centers as learning tools:
Buildings provide a basic service to their inhabitants; shelter from the elements, a place to store belongings, a place to gather, etc. When designed in concert with its surroundings, can that same building become part of the Environmental Educator’s curriculum? Can a building teach?
By beginning the design with the program of the facility (what is the focus? at what scale?) and the features of the site, the facility is rooted within the desired function, creating a foundation upon which to serve the needs of instructors, students, and the local ecology. The action of understanding the basic forces of the land allows the design team to work with educators, staff, and owners to dovetail specific educational tracks of preservation, ecology, and landscape features into the curriculum of the facility thus creating a human / ecology interface that will serve as teacher and place to teach for generations.
The building and facility become the amplifier that magnifies the depth of ecological study.
Sample writing on art and quality design as a social right:
Art and design are social rights. Whether in the form of a place to gather to learn, share, or create or a place for legal art action, art experience is an important piece of our education - and that of our youth. Parks, open spaces, public landscapes, and associated public facilities can and should embrace art. Through cultural, historical, or ephemeral context, the facility and subsequently the experience begin locally.
