About
I was thrilled to learn of this interactive community. There is so much "noise" in the netherworld that it is difficult to sort through all of it. Thus, it is great to find a place to go where at least somewhat like-minded people can converse in an interdisciplinary way.
I have worked in the world of social entrepreneurship and socially responsible business exclusively since 1989. While I do have an MBA from Harvard (not exactly the most conscious place in 1971) and did work for some fascinating organizations (ranging from L. L. Bean to the Museum of Modern Art- now there's a juxtaposition), it took me until the late 80s to wake up and realize that I could not keep my work life/business life and my social/environmental/political beliefs in separate pockets.
I have consulted extensively for small and medium companies, entrepreneurs and non-profits; and because of my background I have sometimes been asked to step in and run them. While my relationships have been varied, my passions have been consistent, ranging from social, environmental and economic justice and natural and organic foods. I was the CEO of Greyston Bakery (NY: inner city, disenfranchised community), Northeast Cooperatives (VT: wholesale natural foods distribution), Eileen Fisher (NY: clothing), and O'Naturals (ME: natural and organic fast food, which I co-founded and still guide part-time). I have helped some amazing organizations and entrepreneurs, including (among others): Putumayo, City Fresh Foods, Little Souls, Seeds of Change, The Ella J. Baker House, Sirius Music, and Blue Fish.
I live in Maine, am married to a professor at the University of Southern Maine and have four grown daughters. I am looking forward to seeing how this community works and how one participates.
