About

Hives Save Lives - Africa believes that income generation is the sustainable route out of poverty.  We promote beekeeping as a means of creating viable small scale businesses, generating employment and income.  We operate mainly in Uganda, but have also supported projects in Sudan and Tanzania.

Bees do not compete for resources such as land, water or forage. Beekeeping requires minimal capital input, and can be practiced by men and women, young and old.  Direct income is provided by the sale of honey and other hive products such as beeswax and propolis, and downstream industries can be developed, such as candlemaking, honey wine, polish, cosmetics, etc.  for further employment and income.  Beekeeping is also instrumental  in maximising crop yields through pollination, and contributes to improved health and nutrition in the community.  It can also be deployed in the battle against deforestation by providing communities with a viable income source from forestry areas, negating the need to fell trees for income and crop cultivation.

We provide hives, equipment, training and marketing support to non-governmental organisations and community based organisations, ranging from schools to farmers' cooperative groups.

The hives and the protective clothing we provide are made in Uganda to generate further employment.
