About

I am a writer, speaker and environmentalist.

The purpose of my work is to create and popularize story-telling projects which explore how to integrate people and nature in order to achieve a sustainable climate-safe future. I have recently become fascinated with the potential of open source digital networks to scale up climate action.

The website of my current project is theherogeneration.org where I am working on creating an open source multimedia slideshow presentation about the tipping points for creative change - and true sustainability.

You will be able to watch it, download it, adapt it and present it to your own community or industry.

I worked for many years as an independent journalist and my articles have been published in many magazines and newspapers including Australian Geographic and The Age. My radio features were broadcast on ABC Radio.

In 2007, I was chosen to train with Al Gore in Australia as part of The Climate Project. I have since presented to almost 2000 people in my local community, helping to inspire a community-owned wind farm project, a greening schools project, and other actions.

I was one of the founding members and President of the Geelong Sustainability Group, focused on local climate action. I have organised public forums on climate change, renewable energy and water.

I studied at Melbourne University and the Graduate School of Environmental Science, Monash University.

I am a former Australian rowing champion, and in 2003, walked 700 kilometres solo along the Australian Alps Walking Track. I am the mother of two young boys.

I have just lived for six months in Bali, Indonesia, but my usual home is near Melbourne, Australia.

The UK government’s recent Climate Change Bill set an ambitious target of an 80% reduction

in emissions by 2050. This level of response to climate change has profound implications for

individual choices and behaviour, as well as for the social structures in which these operate.

With over one third of many nations’ carbon emissions coming from private travel and

domestic energy use, individuals clearly have a key role to play in any potential shift towards

low-carbon societies. An individual can take several roles in promoting a low-carbon society

such as a low-carbon citizen (e.g., voting for a ‘green’ policy), a low-carbon consumer (e.g.,

buying locally-sourced food) or a low-carbon employee (i.e., an employee with a commitment

to a low carbon future who acts as a change agent in the workplace). At the moment, however,

public engagement with climate change in the UK is limited and energy demand for both

domestic uses and transport is rising. Although a large majority of the public recognises terms

such as ‘climate change’, understanding and emotional buy-in are far lower

best of luck ! ! for  a sustainable climate-safe future.  wiserearth with you to make potential of open

source digital networks to scale up climate action.

with love...

Hi Kathryn

Sorry I think chatterbox time is set to west coast US time. No where to change it for us locally. But not to worry!...

Great to hear abut the Hero Generation project. You could also write about it on the WE Fan Page in Facebook, and tell others how you are building a WiserEarth
