Quaker/Buddhist - Lifelong activist on Peace and Social Justice issues, initially in the Civil Rights Movement here in the U.S., and later in efforts to stop the Vietnam War, to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and the liberation of Tibet from Chinese occupation. Professionally: Anti-war organizing in the U.S. Marine Corps (a year of that in Vietnam) for three years, lobbying the Illinois General Assembly on poverty issues for six years for Illinois Legal Aid Programs, and since 1982 directing regional food banks (Central Illinois Food Bank 1982-84, St. Louis Area Food Bank 1984-87, Director of Network Services of America's Second Harvest 1987-89, Second Harvest Gleaners Food Bank of West Michigan 1989-present). In 1994-96 convened and coordinated the Waste Not Want Not Project, an international award-winning research collaboration of Michigan State University and Second Harvest Gleaners Food Bank to identify steps necessary for communities in the U.S. to adequately address their area's hunger problem (see "Charity Food Programs That Can End Hunger In America" in "resources" page of www.wmgleaners.org web site). In 1998 pioneered the use of former beer and soda pop delivery trucks as mobile food pantries. Champion of "pure" food banking (gleaning the food industry's discards; no food purchasing or food drives) and "client choice" (families in need of food aid are permitted to select what they can use from the full array of goods available). Does presentations on how communities can adequately address their hunger problem at 10-12 conferences per year around the U.S.
