About
Barry Voeten (Breda, The Nehterlands, 1972) has been involved in sustainability since 1993. This activity had been triggered by the 1992 report from the Club of Rome. In a group of students he co-authored the Vision of Enschede, a vision for the city for 2050. After the presentation for the Local Agenda 21 project of the City of Enschede that group fell apart. Voeten graduated from the University of Twente in 1996 in Information Technology / Business Information. There appeared to be a strong relationship between the field of Information Technology and Sustainability: the monetary system is the world's largest and most dominant information system and responsible for the major ecological challenge. In a meeting with the Dutch minister of Environment Margreeth de Boer he stated that she should "make the economic system work ecologically". Later, he adopted this as his personal quest. He succeeded a few years later with the formulation of what is now called Rainbow Trading, en economic system that works according to nature's laws.
After several jobs in the upcoming internet industry, he is now a teacher of Information Technology at a secondary school in Rotterdam. Suzanne and Barry are restructuring the back garden following the principles of permaculture. Barry's hobbies are tennis, cycling and all projects related to Rainbow Trading, such as writing and programming. His webserver is also the basis for the internet activity of many of the Transition Towns in The Netherlands.
