I am currently the Evaluation Director at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, where I work closely with program staff to develop and implement assessments of the effectiveness of the foundation’s grant making and promote a culture of practical implementation and learning. Prior to joining the Packard Foundation, I held a similar position at the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation. In my previous incarnation as an evaluator, I have worked in the health and education sectors, providing evaluation and management consultation, health services research and policy analysis for a variety of foundations and community service organizations, federal, state and local governments, and have worked at the Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California at San Francisco, and Children’s Hospital Oakland.
In between being an evaluator and working for a foundation, I was deputy executive director of the USENIX Association (the original unix users group), where I led operations, finance and student programs for the advanced computing systems association, and helped to start a certification program for computer system and network administrators. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from the Johns Hopkins University, and my Doctorate in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley. I am active in the Nonprofit and Foundation Technical Interest Group of the American Evaluation Association and a member of the Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) Organizational Learning Advisory Group. |
