About
A peace-minded freethinker, Erol Hofmans studied history, international relations theory, international law, conflict analysis and political economy at universities in the United States and in Europe. His main priority in life is the development of a peaceful world community.
In 1999, following the Hague Appeal for Peace Civil Society conference, he started to promote the conference's Hague Agenda for Peace and Justice for the 21st Century which redefines peace as not merely the absence of conflict between and within states, but the presence of liberty, equality and solidarity.
In Vienna, he conducted research on the OSCE and developments in the Caucasus and Central Asia regions. Afterwards, he moved to Brussels to conduct research on European foreign policy. From 2004 to 2006, he worked as Project Manager for the Global Security Program of the EastWest Institute, focusing on counter-terrorism. For the EastWest Institute, he organized the Second and Third annual Worldwide Security Conferences.
At present, Erol works with the Northern Alliance for Sustainability, a movement advocating sustainable consumption and production.
In 2004, Erol created the holistic constructivist concept expressing the interconnections between the fields of conflict prevention, education, employment, democracy, economy, health, the environment, culture and spirituality. All these fields need to be guided by the fundamental principles of liberty, equality, and solidarity, and need to be coherently addressed in order to reach a peaceful global community. In 2008, he founded the Center for a World in Balance to further promote and develop this understanding.
Thankfully, people and governments all around the world are at this very moment waking up to a more integrated approach to stability. The Center promotes this philosophy in detail, and offers supporting documentation in easy-to-read format.
Erol has a B.Sc. in Political Communication from Emerson College, Boston and a M.A. in Conflict Analysis from the University of Kent, Canterbury. He is an avid scholar on the history of freedom. He also likes to paint, compose songs, and write poetry.
