Botanic Spine: Proposed 18 km Greenway for Dublin city, Greening the city, connecting communities.

The Botanic Spine is a proposed 18-kilometre long ecological corridor, or greenway, for Dublin city, The spine is a circular loop through the city that connects the river Liffey, the royal and grand canals, the botanic gardens and Europe's largest city park, the phoenix park.

One of the Spine's parks, Sheriff Street Park, is looked at in more detail and a series of future architectural scenarios are explored. What started off as a theoretical architectural thesis in 2005 has led to much more since, including 100+ native Irish trees being donated to communities around the spine, including Sheriff Street, the creation at different times of 5 community gardens along the spine, many bike rides happening along the route, discussions with communities the spine weaves through, community radio and further discussion of new ideas about what future sustainable cities might look like.

EIG CV: Duncan Crowley (O´Cruadhlaoch)

Duncan believes in dreaming boldly and from that, turning ideas into realities. While recognising the global ecological crisis we are facing today, he sees these strange times as the most amazing age to be alive. He is deeply committed to EIG’s vision of a sustainable world and feels that passion and creativity are the tools that bring change.

For over 6 years Duncan has been working to create more ecological cities, having worked in the post-war torn Bosnian city of Banja Luka with ECG (eco city group) to living and working in Lille’s “la Condition Publique” to various projects in Ireland to now living and working with EIG in the bold urban model city of Barcelona.

A qualified architect from the island of Ireland, His 2005 thesis proposed the “Botanic Spine”, an urban greenway and CPUL (continuous productive urban landscape) for his native city Dublin. A firm believer in local community participation and real world action, during this time Duncan was busy getting his hands dirty setting up a number of community gardens in the city as well as organising greenway bike rides. He uses a wide range of tools in his work: art, play, dreaming, joy, celebration, social events, community media, humour, dialogue and education.

9 years ago saw his “journey to the edge of the world”: a 30,000 km overland, half year voyage of learning from the shores of west Clare through Eastern Europe and Asia to the Indian peaks of the Himalayas. 2 years ago he left his home again; “journey to the centre of the world”, (Medi-terranean) has seen him living in the French pavilion Metavilla during the last architectural biennale in Venice, to wandering the old town streets of Genoa, to finally settling in Barcelona, alongside her gentle waves.

Duncan loves nature and participating in projects with people who are moved by their passion for life. For this he is very happy to work with EIG as he feels they are offering solutions to sustain life on earth, he looks forward to their collective adventure.

Hi my name is Joseph Amsili and I will be graduating a semester early from high school in Ithaca, NY. I will be traveling to Barcelona for the spring semester of 09. I will attend La Escuela Mediterráneo, and I would very much like to plug into some volunteer work involving sustainability. I actually got in contact with Maria Colantoni from the organization where you work who said that I should call her when I got there. But I was just looking to make one more connection and wondering if you might have any ideas for places I could do some community service sorrounding sustainability.
