About
Since receiving my doctoral degree in sociology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, I've focused all of my energies on bridging the gap between academics, activists and the average citizen. Focusing on social responsibility, global citizenship and ethical consumerism, I teach and give presentations across the country on how to turn lofty ideals into practical actions. My work includes The Better World Handbook (winner of Sprituality & Health's Best Book of the Year Award for 2001 under the category of Hope) and the recently released The Better World Shopping Guide, a comprehensive, pocket-sized book for socially and environmentally responsible consumers. I've been interviewed for radio and television both in the US and Canada, and am featured in the documentary film, 50 Ways To Save The Planet. In 2005, this work inspired the creation of The Better World Handbook Festival in Vancouver, BC. I've lived, studied, and worked in many parts of Europe, Asia, and Central America. I've won awards for my work in the classroom and currently teach in the department of sociology at University of California, Davis.
I'm currently looking for individuals/institutions that would be interested in supporting this kind of social responsibility research for the long term.

Thank you so much for "the better world shopping guide." When I go to the store, I always have my canvas bags and your guide in hand. As a true believer in "vote with your dollar," your book takes all the guess work out of which companies to support and why. I try to stay above "B," but as I am unemployed right now, I do shop at Target which is rated a C+. Thanks again and keep on creating amazing guides!

Hey, I am impressed on your research, that's a project I could have think of, meaning I guess we have a very similar mind set. I was checking your website and I feel completely connected with your research and the content of your publication. Great Job.
