Areas of Focus
About
I work in sustainability related issues in international development and/or post conflict contexts.
My main areas of focus are sustainable food production, community empowerment and natural resource management.
Most of what I do is driven by two fundemental schools of knowledge: PERMACULTURE (driving my 'sustainability agenda') and PARTICIPATORY METHODOLOGY (driving my 'community agenda').
As my interest and knowledge in sustainability deepens I want to branch out into the engineering aspects of sustainability, mainly through the vehicles of sustainable building and water management.
I am currently stationed in Nepal, working for the Irish humanitarian agency Concern Worldwide, where we are tackling some of the root causes of poverty and food insecurity in the hills. A lot of what I do is embedding DISASTER RISK REDUCTION into our programmes, which includes analysis of risk, disaster preparedness and effective response. I also try to tackle social inequality issues. Most of this lives within a livelihoods programme that seeks to share sustainable market-oriented production skills with poor people.
I have worked in Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, East Timor, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Nepal. I have worked for international organisations, UN, NGOs and as a consultant. I have a bachelors degree in environmental sciences and a masters in rural development.
Besides my passion for sustainability and community I am an avid photographer.
I have a web-site (established when I was a consultant) at www.sustrainability.com where you can find out more about me and my photos.
I was born in England and brought up in Kenya.

Anyone out there know of any short (say 3 months or so) courses (residential or distance) in either sustainable building (design / engineering / construction) or sustainable water management (from swater supply to waste management; ecosystem water management to water cleaning)?
