About

I tend to ramble about at a quicker pace than I'd like. In a few months I traveled across a dozen states, learned timber framing in Vermont, studied Spanish in Cuernavaca, and absorbed some culture in the Sichuan and Yunnan provinces of China. I spend a good portion of my time in Wisconsin researching for WiserEarth, and in Vermont learning at Yestermorrow design/build school. Inspired by my education at The Evergreen State College I traveled and WWOOFed in Scotland and New Zealand. From my academic and WWOOFing experiences, I've found my niche and passion within the realms of permaculture and sustainable building. I contribute to WiserEarth as an intern researcher in the areas of Sustainable Agriculture , Permaculture , Local Food Systems , Rural Farming Communities , Sustainable Urban and Regional Planning , Sustainability Education , Community Participation , Sustainable Forestry , and Sustainable Building .

Since writing this I've slowed my pace and ramblings. I am no longer a WiserEarth researcher- now I'm a casual contributor. I've chosen Vermont as my home and reside in southern part of the state on an eleven acre homestead. Currently I am seeking a Sustainable Building and Design certificate at Yestermorrow Design/Build School in central Vermont.  As my practicum project for the certificate program, I am building an earthen dwelling upon a near century old dry stone foundation.  Complete with a living roof, timber frame, straw clay and cob walls, dry stack stone, rocket stove, wool insulated roof and door, custom-made door and hardware, and a dry stone floor.  As much of the materials as possible will come from the land around the site.

                        The site prior to building.

When I'm not taking courses or building: I volunteer at the Heartbeet community in northern Vermont, work at the Brattleboro Farmers' Market, make concrete countertops, and live and help out on the homestead in southern VT.

Brandon,

Seems like we have more in common than the name Heartwood. I am presently seeking to build what I call "Heartwood House."  This will be an historic restoration, green home, sustainable building learning/jobs creation project that will later serve as a model for "doing for others" in other similar projects around the nation.  I will soon be placing this project on a website.  I would like to know if the Heartwood traveling workshops may be a part of this project. I am presently gutting/recycling the old house as I work on design.  Care to get involved?
