About
I am an applied limnologist with many years of experience in the study of aquatic ecology, mosquito vector management and water planning. I specialize in the ecology of mosquitoes in relation to vector-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus, malaria and dengue. I have studied the effects of toxic contaminants on invertebrate communities in lakes and have helped develop innovative techniques in storm water management. I was insturmental in concluding a number of drinking water management initiatives on the Sunshine Coast and in facilitating meetings between stakeholders to create long-term Water Master Plans.
I have travelled widely throughout the world and most recently have spent much of my free time in Central America studying the wider issues surrounding vector-borne disease transmission and liaising with fellow academics, government representatives and community stakeholders. I am currently helping to initiate a series of facilitated dialogues on water management between community stakeholders, academics, business and government in Costa Rica.
I am the chair of the Ruby Lake Lagoon Nature Reserve Society and am privilaged to work with a wonderful group of conservationists who have come together to help build the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre - a state-of-the-art green building and educational facility for all ages - for more details see www.lagoonsociety.com.
