About

I am a traditional midwife living in Chumpon Quintana Roo Mexico. I am secretary in a NGO called Parteras Tradicionales Unidas Tumben Cuxtal AC. I live in a traditional mayan village, in the jungle. I am origanally from Switzerland. My partner is a mayan and ejidatario.
I want to communicate with other organizations mainly, because of my worries of the future of our villages. You probably know Cancun, it lies north of us and is the main issue why everything is changing here.
The mayans are very simple self providing people. But now modernization has caused things to drastically change. People have cars, TVs, and washing machines. Everyone uses these commodities with great ignorance. We use pesticides, chlorines and many other poisons freely, without knowing it´s effects. The woman spray Baigon pesticide on the children hair for example to get rid of the lice. There is no rubbish collection, so we either burn it or throw it in the backyard.
Now everyone is interested in our lands to build an international airport. Everyone is happy about it because it will finally bring money and feed the hungry mouths. Everyone wants to sell lands so they can aspire the luxuries they see on TV.
Meanwhile the medical system has completely demonized the traditional system, so closely connected to nature. All the children are treated with chemicals and fed with powdered milk. There culture is rapidly getting lost, their traditions, their language and their knowledge on how their world works.
My work is dedicated to restoring traditional midwifery and to make sure that health care increases in quality for women. But I am also wife and mother of 6 children and worried about the near future. I would like to contact organizations that would be interested in helping us save this community we live in.
