About

My colleagues and I are part of a grassroots, multi-sectoral citizens group called Headwaters Communities in Action.

The purpose of Headwaters Communities in Action is to engage the residents of Dufferin County and surrounding communities to mobilize their collective assets to ensure the highest possible quality of life for all residents.  We do this by strengthening our community’s ability to foster a culture of engagement, inclusion and collaboration – its social prosperity in a sustainable way.  We believe that creating such a cultural shift is the determining factor behind enhancing our community’s quality-of-life. In particular, we fulfill our mandate by:
  • engaging individuals and organizations throughout the Headwaters area in sharing their ideas and perspectives about what is needed to enhance social prosperity - broadening and deepening commitment to a shared vision
  • facilitating opportunities for collaboration among diverse sectors that will strengthen the communities within the Headwaters area
  • supporting mobilization around goals that the community has identified to achieve our shared vision of social prosperity
As grassroots citizens collaborative we have facilitated community consensus around a Community Action Plan for Social Prosperity and are well into the implementation of 2 priority projects identified by this community. Our primary focus for 2007 and 2008 is the development of a trails strategy, and a quality of life report card. With regard to trails, HCIA is facilitating trails groups and other stakeholders through a process of identifying priorities for trail development, and supporting collaboration and mobilization of resources needed to act on the priorities.  The ultimate goal of this strategy is to create an interconnected network of multi-use trails, bike lanes, and walkways in the Headwaters area.  The quality of life report card initiative is focused on facilitating greater regional collaboration throughout the Headwaters area for the purpose of effectively addressing issues that are impacting the quality of life of residents.  The report card will provide information on our environmental, health, social, and economic status as a region. Once the report is published, HCIA will coordinate community consultations aimed at identifying priority issues for action, and will facilitate collaboration across sectors to take action on those issues. Over the past year, we have realized multiple achievements in the implementation of our key projects, in particular we have:
  • ·         tripled our pool of active volunteers involved in the project;  which is a result of  our project activities aligning well with the identified needs of local citizens
  • ·         secured $76,900 for activities to be implemented this year from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Trails for Life, and Dufferin County Council
  • ·         secured meeting space, and administrative support from Town of Mono, Hills of Headwaters Tourism Association, Wellington Dufferin Guelph Health Unit, TFI Aerospace, ACTS Headwaters Family Fitness and Community Living Dufferin
  • ·         published a study of trail resources, and are convening a meeting to coordinate the development of a trails strategy for the Headwaters area
  • ·         have established an active volunteer working group with representation from business, health & social services, and the environmental sectors to facilitate the development of a report card on quality of life in the Headwaters area
  • ·         initiated a process to partner with York University to provide academic support for the Quality of Life Report Card, and mentoring support from Toronto Community Foundation’s, Vital Signs Program
  • ·         received positive encouragement in our meetings with the 8 local municipalities in Dufferin County, with the Town of Caledon, and with the Town of Erin; and, we have been invited to engage the councilors in the Town of Caledon in a workshop to develop a working relationship with them
  • ·         developed an active web site and electronic newsletter that supports effective communication with residents in the Headwaters area
