Pepper:

I am from the Philippines (Metro Manila area) --- what I want to advocate for is to bring back our God-given trees in the urban setting.  We have some 3,500 native trees -- only one species gets planted substantially, pterocarpus indicus, in the metropolis.

Planting tree is OK -- planting native tree is much better.

How can I advocate and argue for native trees?

I am not a technical person.  In fact, I am a musician by education (marimba).

I am an advocate for tree planting, care and stewardship education in cities and towns, where trees are a major indicator species of a healthy community environment. This movement and discipline is called Urban and Community Forestry.

Tree canopy isn't just beautiful. Trees in neighborhoods make a particularly significant contribution economically, socially and, of course, environmentally.

I am a former journalist (20 years in world news) and I believe this is a "higher calling" because science is showing that the myriad benefits of trees are too large to ignore.

  • Strategically placed trees (the right tree in the right place) can substantially reduce energy costs.
  • Tree canopy absorbs the fine particulates emitted by coal-fired power plants that are extremely harmful to the lungs, and especially the lungs of children and the elderly.
  • Trees raise property value. The most important value in real estate is "location, location, location," but the second is "curb appeal."

. . .  more to come.
