About

"It's not about you,
it's about them."
-Pong Leung
Buddhist Economics??? Gross National Happiness?? Can such contradictions really exist?
I'm sitting blissfully in a bubble of sustainable goodness, an awesome amplitude of energetic environmental enthusiasts with a passion for real progress. I'm part of the Master's in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability in Karlskrona, Sweden. Surrounded by 64 of the biggest hearts and most intelligent minds I've ever met, and we are actively co-creating the future.
If only we could change the economic assumption of a 'rational consumer' to include the basic concepts of the Golden Rule, and the buddhist ideal that what is good for everyone will benefit you as well! Instead of a society predicated on selfish behaviour, we could create a world that values the connections between all living beings.
"Anyone who believes exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist"
-Kenneth Boulding

I am a corporate hippie full of contradictions and oxymorons. I am a rugby player that practices yoga. I am a video game addict that meditates regularly. I'm an internet nerd that can't wait to play outside. I play all of Leela's games by the rules, but I see right through Maya's veil of illusion. I have communal sharing tendencies, while championing the efficiencies of the free market. I plan meticulously for the future, while living every moment squarely in the present. I see the obscure relativity of time and space, but am extremely punctual for practice and games. I have compassion for all living things, yet I eat dead plants and animals everyday. I see the destructive fallacies inherent in human activity, yet I fight day-to-day to heal, restore, and rebuild global interconnectedness. I believe in nothing (truth to me is NEVER absolute), yet I believe in everything (we are ALL divine). I am horribly confused and muddled by this pragmatic reality, yet I can conceive of the ideal global destination and I can see clearly the path beneath my feet. Go figure!
Fortunately, I am blessed with an open mind and a thousand different teachers.
I'm currently focusing on the notion of a Sustainable Mutual Fund so that conscious individuals can invest for their retirement and simultaneously help the growth of sustainability-oriented companies. I really like the idea of shareholder advocacy to force change from within the system.
WiserEarth is like a dream for me, so many wonderful opportunities for meaningful connections. I am deeply thankful for its existence.

Hi Nash,
Reading your profile introduced me to MSLS. It's good to know that higher studies based on a more radical systemic approach such as this one is going mainstream. Maybe someday I'll have a chance to go there myself. By the way, I like how you wrote your profile. Excellent use of contrast. I'm sure I'll be seeing you more in WiserEarth. Nice to know you. |

Hi Tim -- Glad to see another MSLS '08 person on this site! I, too, am excited about the program and overall experience. My interests lie in the implementation of sustainable practices in everything (of course), but my back ground is in public policy and regional and community development, so I'm choosing to focus my post-school efforts on sustainable public policy and capacity-building. Looking forward to seeing you in August. Be well...

“Economy is the basis of society. When the economy is stable, society develops. The ideal economy combines the spiritual and the material, and the best commodities to trade in are sincerity and love.”
If I were U.S. Secretary of Education I would make 2 years of Akido training to be a requirement for graduation from high school in US. ;-) By the way, do you ever wonder what is an average educational level of US senator?
