About

I am a fresh graduate for Gatech, where I worked with a start-up, grassroots organization, entitled "Students Organizing for Sustainabilty." My favorite memories from this group are fostering a lecture series and watching the CSA (community supported agriculture) program grow.

I am currently in Mexico working for Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo CIMMYT. CIMMYT is a non-profit agricultural group that works to create better seeds and farming practices (my favorite being No Till / Conservation Agriculture). I love working here because it is located on a large farm/community college-esk campus .
The job is much different, however, than my previous position with Environment Georgia - this was also non-profit work, but it focused on local community outreach and lobbying, as opposed to CIMMYT's larger,
international scale (for more discussion on scale, read Aldo Leopold or Bryan Norton).
Both experiences have helped shape my future education goals: I wish to address future problems by attaining a more tangible skill set than that offered by a political science education - that is, a masters degree in either Natural Resource Management or City Planning. Que Bueno.

Mary, You are really going after it. I decided after studying renewables as an alternative to Engineering, and then as an alternative to Architecture, to pursue a degree in what I call Urban Ecology, or a gen ed degree emphasizing in Geography GIS, Economics, and Public Policy. I plan on attaining a master in Public Affairs, but along the way I took a course at Boston Architectural College on Sustainable Communities to enhance my understanding of city planning, and current Sustainable Development/Smart Growth best practices. I assume you degree is in Poli Sci? Would you like to talk/chat in the future? If so post me back. I'm sure we can find something to say. Regards, Paul "Brad"ley McConnell |

Mary,
Thanks for the reply. How are things in Mexico? I'm pretty busy w/ classes in the middle of the states. There's lots going on. It seems that the areas I am studying are very much connected. Econ and Public Policy share many of the same principles and fundamental premises. Money is behind everything though I am interested in valuing public or basic needs goods and so I'm trying to learn how to create geographic representations of these resources to explain how their interrelated and tied into our economic/ecologic system. I hope to be able to truthfully represent these relationships so that they can be understood by all in a transparent manner. How did you come across Wiser Earth? What is exciting in your world?
Kind regards,
Brad
