About
I live in the small mountain town of Dunsmuir, in the Upper Sacramento River watershed a few miles below Mt. Shasta. I'm a Permaculture Design Course grad (OAEC 9/08), passionate about growing flowers, edible landscapes, food forests and guilds, as well as being a watershed steward in a very magical area.
I am learning to be a mainstream activist in a small-town environment, where friendships must be cultivated carefully before changes can happen. Local challenges include economic depression, political conservatism, apathy, ignorance, and just plain insufficient mass of progressive, ecologically-aware community. I participate in the local Garden Club, Chamber of Commerce and The Upper Sacramento River Exchange: http://www.riverexchange.org We have a small core of people working to develop a Community Compost project, and hopefully a Community Garden to follow.
I'd love to network with Jefferson (S. Oregon, far N.Ca) permies, gardeners and environmentalists, to protect this beautiful area and help to educate its people on sustainable topics.
I also have presence on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/ledahorticulture and occasionally post on LiveJournal: http://liadanlj.livejournal.com/

Hey Beki,
Glad you liked the post card! I did a quick search on your friend and she's now Carole Teshima Morris, and living in Bellingham, WA - a great place for permie projects :)
I just got back from Australia, taking the PRI class for Permaculture Aid Workers. That's a long story, and I'll be posting on my blog about it, but I really enjoyed the incredible tropical rain forests in the Channon. OK, I didn't even KNOW there were tropical rain forests in Oz! The best part of the class was Rowe Morrow, one of the few women who've been taking P-C to the outposts, including Afghanistan, Cambodia, Uganda, and points beyond. She's amazing, kind, and incredible knowledgeable. We dubbed her permaculture's "Mother Theresa."
It looks like I'm heading to Ecuador next month to work on Brian Criswell's project in Jama Coaque. Then I just GOTTA find some paying work, though working for free has been a blast. Hope the winter is giving you some interesting PATO opportunities on your land!

HI, Alison, I just picked this up. I got tired of being the only active member of Permiewormies, so have moved on to Facebook.
Are you in Ecuador now? How very cool, that you are mobile enough to travel. I've got a job and a mortgage and little to spare, but at least I get to work from home full-time and enjoy my husband's company. He's an acupuncturist, with a clinic downstairs, so we have the perfect live-work situation for us both. We're busy with books and crafts and music this winter.
Wendy and I are starting to teach Organic Gardening classes here this month, and our Community Compost project is simmering: 40 truckloads of fall leaves, in a pile under the snow. We'll start adding the green stuff to it in the spring. Have the use of a little tractor to turn it with.
I've ordered a bunch more berries and perennial vegetables, etc. to add to my own garden, which oughtta be a bonafide backyard food forest in a couple more years. Wish I had room for chestnuts and pawpaws, but someone else will...
Thanks for the google on my friend: I obviously hadn't done that yet. So she's back in Bellingham... will have to track that girl down...
Hugs,
Beki
