About

  • My fascination with the beauty and complexity of our natural world has led to a lifetime of study and work in the natural sciences. I’ve been an ornithology instructor for the National Audubon Society in Maine, a field biologist studying biodiversity in the West Indies, and a wildlife technician working with endangered species for the National Park Service in the Everglades. In 1997, I began working in the tourism industry, guiding trips to New England, Quebec, Alaska, the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Tanzania, and the Canadian Rockies. My love of nature and enthusiasm for travel makes every workday intriguing and exciting. However, my field biology and guiding experiences also taught me something else: to better understand the complexity of conservation issues it is imperative to understand the social, economic, and policy dynamics that are an inherent part of all environmental problems. This led me to enroll in graduate school at The Evergreen State College. Here, I became the first coordinator of the Sustainability Task Force and conducted the college’s most comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory.
  • I write a blog on conservation issues as they relate to my travels at: http://johnnypstravellog.blogspot.com.
