About
I work for Public Health Seattle & King County and manage the county’s efforts around Healthy Eating and Active Living. My passion is to advance programs and policies around Nutrition, Physical Activity, Land Use and the Built Environment to help all residents "make the healthy choice, the easy choice." I am working with many community partners to advance a new Kellogg Foundation funded effort, called the King County Food and Fitness Initiative (www.kcffi.org) to support local, sustainable food systems and safe and inviting places for physical activity and play for children and families in our region. My background is in Nutrition Science, with an emphasis on understanding chronic disease. I have been involved locally for the last 5 years in school gardening through the Puget Sound School Gardens Collective (www.pugetsoundschoolgardens.org), Farm to School efforts (www.farmtoschoolwashington.org), community gardening (http://seattle.gov/neighborhoods/ppatch/), the Acting Food Policy Council (http://king.wsu.edu/foodandfarms/foodpolicycouncil.htm), campaigns that promote eating local food (http://www.pugetsoundfresh.org/eatlocal/index.asp), and advancing local food policy (e.g. http://www.environmentalpriorities.org/local-farms/local-farms-healthy-kids). I also volunteer as a board member of the P-Patch Trust (www.ppatchtrust.org), a nonprofit organization working to acquire, build, preserve and protect community gardens in Seattle’s neighborhoods. I believe strongly in the role of local, sustainable agriculture in the prevention of chronic disease and as an essential way to promote lifelong health for people and the planet.
