About

Eliot Hurwitz has a B.A. in Anthropology from Harvard University with studies in biology, traditional Chinese sciences and botany. He has extensive training in community facilitation, meditation, yoga and alternative health practices.  Relevant work experience includes:

  • Medical Education 1975-1981: New York City television producer/director, scriptwriter and production manager, primarily in medical educational television
  • Sustainable Community Development Policy and Community Organizing 1991- present: Washington DC, San Francisco Bay Area – writer and media specialist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) focusing on environmental policy including two years as media spokesperson and press liaison. While at the NOAA Office of Sustainable Development and Intergovernmental Affairs, served as staff to the Clinton/Gore “President’s Council for Sustainable Development,” to the “White House Task Force on Livable Communities” and other intergovernmental working groups related to sustainable development. Part of themanagement council of the “Bay Area Alliance for Sustainable Communities,” a coalition of the region’s major business, environmental, social equity and governmental organizations.
  • In Napa CA, responsible for long range strategic planning, specifically to create a comprehensive countywide community development strategy, including establishment of a countywide leadership “Issues Forum” for mayors and council members meeting monthly.
