Sustainability Movement

The environmental movement is failing. For all the successes and hopeful signs in the past 40 yrs, it is becoming ever more painfully clear that it has not been, nor will it be, enough to effectively preserve, restore and sustain our biosphere's critical ecosystems, biodiversity, natural resources, and livable climate. It, therefore, is apparent that an ...learn more

About

I am the educational director of an environmental NGO in Rishikesh, in northern India called 'Clean Himalaya'

For more about us we are on wiserearth and also see our website www.cleanhimalaya.com

My friend Jitendra Kumar started the project in 2000 by picking up plastic bottles around the area as there was no local government policy to tackle the growing garbage problem in this beautiful and sacred area of the Himalayan foothills. Later we found out how we could recycle and got local rag-pickers to help. In 2007 we applied to the World Bank Award for Grassroots Initiatives for management and protection of natural resources and won. Our aim is to develop a comprehensive and wholistic waste management and recycling program that can be replicated in other parts of India. A lot of our work involves educating the local community in waste managment and more broadly in environmental issues.

I am also managing a spiritual centre for EnlightenNext in Rishkesh, an organization that is dedicated to the evolutionary enlightenment teachings of  spiritual teacher, Andrew Cohen. See www.wie.org and www.enlightenNext.org

I am really interested in meeeting people that are interested in change, especially in India--change on  the environmental and cultural level, but also change from the inside out as well as the outside in, which is what we are trying to do in Clean Himalaya. So we meditate and try and discover a deeper ground from which to act and make choices and develop our own values and consciousness-- at the same time as developing Clean Himalaya and doing our best to clean up the environment in Rishkesh!
It would be great to connect with anyone who shares this kind of vision, whether in India or anywhere else! And if you can, come and visit us or even better volunteer with us!

All the best,
Steve

Hi Mike-thanks for your message. I just checked out your website-very cool-very interesting work you are doing-thanks for introducing me to it. Yes, it would be great to bring the symposium to India.

Incidentally I went to a conference in Auroville this Spring and made some very good connections there. They are really trying to achieve something very big there, its quite an experiement in literally trying to create a new world. They have had their fair share of struggles, but its an awesome project. Its all based on the vision of Sri Aruobindo, one of the greatest Indian revolutionary spiritual teachers. My teacher Andrew Cohen's work  on evolutionary enlightenment is actually a natural progression of Sri. Aurobindo's philosophy, so I feel very connected to what they are trying to do in Auroville-its very much what we are trying to do also albeit in a different form-so all power to them!

It would be great to stay connected-thanks!

All the best-
Steve

Hi Steve:  Thanks for visiting The Heritage Institute site on We and commenting on the videos by Global Oneness Project which we particularly like. I am part of an initiative, Awakwening the Dreamer, changing the Dream.  I'm sure that the sponsoring group, The Pachamama Alliance, would love to bring this symposium to India.  I'm hoping some time in the next few years to get back to India. I would love to visit Auroville, an international intentional community in Tamil Nadu state.

Peace.
