Arcola Theatre was
founded in September 2000 when Mehmet Ergen (the present Artistic Director) and
Leyla Nazlı (the present Executive Director) converted a textile factory on the
borders of Stoke Newington/Dalston into one of London’s largest and most adaptable fringe
venues. In 7 years Arcola has developed a distinct and powerful identity both
within in the local community and British theatre.
Through Arcola Energy, launched in July 2007, Arcola Theatre is driving
the eco-cultural frontier; in the first 7 months we have already installed a
hydrogen fuel cell to power shows, low power LED lighting and Bluetooth
paperless marketing tools. Arcola Theatre has the practical expertise (our
Chief Executive Dr Ben Todd is a Fuel Cell Engineer) and strategic partnerships
(Arts/ Education /Government/Engineering) to lead the arts in taking ‘real’
actions and to demonstrate the ethical, financial and ecological benefits of
such change.
