Problem

Dinamicoop is a community-based Information Technology Cooperative in Morro dos Macacos, one of Rios squatter settlements. The coop provides a range of services, ranging from a community technology center with 40 computers, to website creation and computer repair. The coop is constantly training youth from the community in these services, preparing them for the job market, in addition to providing useful IT services within the neighborhood.

Dinamicoop is a nonprofit organization, born within a social movement, from a community base. It is the fruit of entrepreneurial action by youth who knew how to identify and combine technological competency with life experience. The institution arose with the goal of contributing to the generation of work and income, oriented toward social inclusion and productivity of youth and adults from the community of Morro dos Macacos.

The sustainability of entrepreneurship; the stimulus to autonomy and democracy; the permanent stimulus for the entrepreneurial posture; beyond the possibility of association of technical education in technology to an economic and social inclusion of fact. Thus, the Dinamicoop functions in the sense of taking hold of what is characterized as one of the major challenges of this community: the generation of work and income.

Action

Community Technology Center:

Telecentro DinamiNET DinamiNET is a democratic space for internet access and other information technologies and communication. It is currently constituted by forty machines (Pentium 100Mhz) linked to a server of greater processing capacity (Pentium IV with 1Gb of RAM).

Telecentro utilizes the Plurall system, developed by NGO Movements in Network and the Coordination Center of Development Projects of the PUC_Rio, with the support of IBM and Cisco. This supports a terminals-server solution (thin client), developed in open code, that makes possible the assembly of local information networks as part of a server, and from old computers without a hard drive, reutilized as terminals. Telecentro seeks to provide the opportunity for access to less favored populations, charging a symbolic value of R$1.00/ hour. Aside from internet, DinamiNET offers complementary services for the community such as: curriculum development, document printing, with monies received being reinvested in improvements to the space.

CRF - Center for Reference and Development:

The Center for Reference and Development is an activity of Dinamicoop oriented toward dissemination of an entrpreneurial and citizenship culture among the young people of the community by means of technology labs (computer networks, web design, graphic design, free software and management and maintenance of micros and laptops [notebooks]). The objective of the CRF is to train not only professionls in Information Sciences, but young community leaders capable of transforming their reality and dedicating their knowledge to the development of the community. Through this initiative it seeks to coordinate technical, human and entreprenurial competence, in a way that contributes to strengthening of the community and to generation of work and income, disseminating the access to TICs and for the formation of mulitpliers.
