The Three Rivers Arts Festival was founded in 1959 by the Women's Committee of the Carnegie Museum of Art in cooperation with a cross section of Pittsburgh business and cultural leaders. A commitment had been made to revitalize and energize the downtown area and the Festival was seen as a vehicle to fulfill this commitment.
