About [Edit]
Relatively few UC students are aware of the UC’s status as one the world’s largest nuclear weapons contractors. Even fewer understand the significance of the UC’s relationship with the Los Alamos and Livermore labs beyond a surface level. The Coalition to Demilitarize the UC’s Grassroots Education campaign seeks to address this gap in student awareness by finding creative ways to reach students with in-depth information and analysis of UC-enabled nuclear weapons design, research, and production.
* The ultimate goal of this education is to build a critical mass of students at each UC campus with enough grassroots people power to significantly influence the UC power structure.
* Current Grassroots Education Tactics
o 1. “UC and the Bomb” Class: The "UC and the Bomb" class series is taking place, simultaneously, at three UC campuses in the spring of 2006. Each class focuses on the UC's deep and decisive involvement in the global military-industrial complex, most salient in its management of the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. These classes are entirely student-created and student-led. There are no teachers, only peers.
The class reflects the Coaliiton to Demilitarize the UC's growing capacity to engage students in innovative ways. Each class is extremely action-oriented: The emphasis is to empower students to take action on the issues addressed -- where possible, by plugging in with the work of the Coalition to Demilitarize the UC.
o 2. Outreach Blitz Week: August and September 2006: Coming this fall... as soon as the UC campuses open for classes, the Coalition to Demilitarize the UC will make its presence felt in a major way, with a series of creative, awareness-raising events and activities. Stay tuned for more info...
o 3. Publications: The Coalition has broadcasted its message in various self-produced, student-produced and independent publications in recent years, including the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation’s Demilitarization Guide; Fiat Pax’s Guide to the Militarization of American Universities; and DisOrientation Guides at UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Berkeley, as well as the ReOrientation Guide at UC Davis. We continue to publish content at www.indymedia.org and its affiliated network of Web sites relatively frequently.
3. Media Outreach: The Coalition has conducted numerous press conferences and events aimed at getting media attention to broadcast the campaign’s goals. In the last few years, Coalition members have been quoted or featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times, the San Jose Mercury-News, and numerous other mainstream media outlets. We have also been featured multiple times in UC campus newspapers. Some of these articles can be found in the Media Coverage section.
4. Classroom Presentations & Public Speaking: We are always on the look-out for public speaking engagements and opportunities to do classroom presentations. Those interested – please contact us!
