About [Edit]
As hundreds gathered in Daley Center Plaza in downtown Chicago, Peace Day began with One Minute of Silence for World Peace at noon led by Peace School president Charles Kim and members of the Chicago Consular Corps. The highlight of the event was the Call to Peace and World Peace Flag Ceremony, which opened and closed with the Earth flag to represent harmony and unity among all peoples. Live music depicting the various regions of the world was played during the Flag Ceremony, and the flags of all 192 nations of the world were respectfully presented on stage as everyone joined in sending their thoughts and prayers for peace to each country equally. Flag bearers included students, the Consuls General of Canada, Ecuador, Egypt, Haiti and Ukraine as well as Consulate officers and representatives of more than a dozen other nations; volunteers from various ethnic/social service organizations, and members and friends of The Peace School.
The one-hour program also included performances by Chicago's remarkable trio, The Other 3 Tenors; Chicago's leading taiko drumming ensemble JASC Tsukasa Taiko, and spirited bagpipers from Tunes of Glory Pipes & Drums. Barry Weisberg, Executive Director of the Violence Prevention Peace Promotion Strategy was Master of Ceremonies. Peace Day has been sponsored in Chicago annually since 1978 by The Peace School, a non-profit educational organizations. Since 1993 The Peace School has organized Peace Day in cooperation with the City of Chicago Mayor's Office of Special Events. Peace Day always focuses on positive ways to Build the Peace in ourselves, our homes, our communities, nations and world.
