2nd Annual Sustainable Watershed Management
A Five-Day Short Course at the University of California, Santa Barbara

Module 1: June 18-19, 2007
Module 2: June 20-22, 2007

A joint project between the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, UCSB, and UCSB Extension Watershed Lake Mountain

Overview
The objective of this course is to familiarize participants with the process and tools used for developing a Watershed Management Plan (WMP). In today’s world, any planning must seek to achieve sustainability, so the course begins with a discussion of these issues in the context of watershed planning. The discussion also considers the regulatory framework in which watershed planning must be done. Participants have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the implementation and use of a watershed model used in support of the planning process, although the objective of the course is not to train watershed modelers. To put the theory into perspective, the course ends with a presentation and discussion of several case studies, as well as a discussion of important issues such as managing uncertainty in the planning process and worth the value of additional data.

Who Attends
The course, Module 1 and Module 2, is targeted to working professionals in the water resources management area, including consultants, staff from regulatory agencies and non-governmental organizations, as well as from private industry. Module 1 provides a general overview of the key steps for developing a WMP, and a number of practical case studies to help participants understand how a WMP is actually developed, and how different water resources concerns are addressed; it provides managers with a solid understanding to the toolkit available for dealing with the planning process. Module 2 is designed for professionals who are closer to the modeling process, and need to understand how the toolkit works through hands-on experiences, and who would benefit from a more structured approach to developing a modeling framework to support the development of the WMP.
