About  [Edit]

The aims of One Planet Living (OPL) are to:
  1. Build a worldwide network of One Planet Living Communities to demonstrate One Planet Living in action and establish One Planet Living Centres in each One Planet Living Community as a focus for education.
  2. Promote the imperative for One Planet Living and its guiding principles to catalyse change with governments, business and individuals.
One Planet Living Community aims:

In order to spread our message widely around the world and show that sustainable communities can work in very different locations we aim to build communities in six countries across five continents. The countries that we are focusing on are: Portugal, UK, North America, China, Australia and South Africa. By 2010 we aim to have started construction on two communities.

Each community will be exemplary and replicable; achieving sustainable use of energy, water and waste and major reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases. Each will be of an inspiring scale and will include schools, offices, transport networks and health and leisure facilities, enabling residents to live easily within their fair share of the Earth's resources whilst improving their health, quality of life, and ultimately happiness. The ten guiding principles of One Planet Living below provide a framework for achieving our aims.

ONE PLANET LIVING PRINCIPLE AIM
Zero Carbon Minimising CO2 emissions from heating, cooling and powering our buildings
Zero Waste Minimising waste and flows of waste to landfill in a resource-efficient society
Sustainable Transport Reducing the need to travel and providing sustainable alternatives to private car use
Local and Sustainable Materials Optimisation of use of materials, in terms of their source and their performance
Local and Sustainable Food Maximisation of opportunities for use of local food supplies
Sustainable Water Minimisation of water consumption
Natural Habitats and Wildlife Protection of the natural environment and the habitats it offers to flora and fauna
Culture and Heritage Protection of the cultural heritage and the sense of local and regional identity
Equity and Fair Trade Promoting equity and fair trade within the community
Health and Happiness Promoting well-being and healthy lifestyles
