About  [Edit]

Exposure to intuitive and outsider art introduces a new way of thinking about creative expression. By learning about the unique aesthetics and life experiences of outsider artists, students discover that art can be a product of their own personal vision, and that their artistic abilities are not limited by a lack of training, privilege, or access to professional materials.

In addition, outsider art can be a catalyst for critical discussion about the marginalization and social hierarchies drawn along lines of race, class, and gender. Students and community groups are given the opportunity to explore the often underrepresented art and histories of marginalized groups and see how art can be a form of empowerment and a way to have a voice.

Program:

Teachers selected from Chicago Public Schools are chosen to participate in comprehensive training sessions at Intuit during the Fall semester. Through lectures, visits with outsider artists, tours of outsider art collections and environments, and access to Intuit's Robert A. Roth Study Center, teachers gain the necessary background and tools on how to integrate teachings about intuitive and outsider art into their curriculum.

Following the training sessions at Intuit, the teachers create lesson plans for implementation in the Spring semseter. Teachers and students also take field trips to Intuit to see our current exhibitions.

The program culminates with an exhibition celebrating the art created by students. The lesson plans written by the teachers are also put on Intuit's website as a way to make them an available resource to other educators, and to share the program participants' efforts.

• Teacher Fellowship grant
In addition to training and resources, the applicants selected for the program will each be awarded a fellowship stipend from Intuit to create an outsider art-inspired curriculum.
• Team up with another educator at your school and apply
Teachers apply for this program in teams of two. Applicants do not have to be art educators - those who specialize in subjects other than art are welcome to participate as a way to facilitate the integration of art into core curriculum. However, if you are not an art teacher we ask that the teacher you partner with is.
