About [Edit]
Grandmothers from around Byron Shire gathered at the Peace Pole at noon on Sunday September 23. Brandishing pots, pans and drums, they made a noise for peace for one minute.Local grandmother and social activist Norma Forest issued the call: "May there be peace
on earth and may it begin with me". The day began with Nigel Stewart, Arakwal-Bundhjalung representative, invoking the spirit of the land and sea to bless the occassion through song, dance and story. Shire surfers, led by Bev Joy and Arakwal surfing ace Sean Kay, took the peace message to the waters of the bay. The peace flame was in attendance and Peace Week concluded with Byron Bay declared a 'Bay of Peace'.
The Byron Peace Group would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters, including Byron Neighbourhood & Resource Centre, Grooven, The Echo, Passion@Flowers and Madura Tea/Taste of Byron.
