About  [Edit]

This photo essay won an award for the Outstanding Story on Any Subject in New Media at the 2003 South Asian Journalists (SAJA) Annual Convention at Columbia University in New York City.

Since 1990, when five decades of resentment against Indian rule erupted into a full-scale uprising, the fabled Vale of Kashmir has been seen as a land of devastation.

Kashmir Retextured is an attempt to restore a much-needed banality to "Paradise," a land where people undergo with and without war their chronicles of birth, love, loss, and death.  And joy!

Kashmir Retextured does not ignore the political, which is impossible considering how the political has informed Kashmir for centuries, especially since the 1947 partition of India.  By focusing on the people, and their landscapes, this journey creates a perspective for the political.  What is lost sight of in time of war is precisely what one needs for the future.
