Water can't be taken for granted

March 22 is World Water Day, a time for all of us to take seriously the shrinking availability of fresh water sources around the world.

Water can no longer be taken for granted. With climate change, deforestation and poor conservation, our rivers are running dry and water tables are lowering. In arid and third world countries, lack of potable water is the second leading cause of death among children. Polluted water kills 1.8 million children under age 5 each year.

Americans each use about 40 gallons of water daily, compared with the 1.2 gallons used by people in developing nations.

Maintaining water as a public resource is a human right. Governments should be the benevolent guardian of the water commons. Unlike corporations, who serve only their stockholders, governments must serve their constituents - and all constituents are water users.
