About [Edit]
ART’s Mission
To support the rights and aspirations of rural communities to secure maximum benefits from sustainable use of their natural resources, by promoting a favorable regional and international policy environment.
ART’s Purpose
ART is dedicated to the alleviation of poverty in Africa and focuses on the sustainable use of natural resources by rural communities. ART enables Africa’s rural people to articulate their perspectives and, as a southern organisation, counters the traditional North-South flow of information. ART believes that informing the public and policy-makers in the North is essential to the success of sustainable development in the South.
ART’s areas of focus are:
? Policy analysis
? Information Outreach, and
? Networking and capacity building
Under Policy research and analysis ART is involved in the monitoring of international conventions and regulations and regional instruments that affect Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) in southern Africa. Some of these international conventions are the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Convention International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD), Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC), World Trade Organisation (WTO); and various regional protocols. ART works closely with other organisations to put across the southern African perspective and help to influence decisions on behalf of southern Africa.
