About [Edit]
The New Brunswick Environmental Law Society (NBELS) is New Brunswick's first non-profit, public interest environmental law organization. Based in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, the NBELS was created in 2005 and was publicly launched in 2007. The organization's goals include promoting a better public understanding of the role of the law in environmental matters. The NBELS also offers various services to New Brunswickers and it has become one of the province's most vocal environmental groups, with stands on a variety of issues including pesticides, mining and law reform.
The NBELS began its operations by hosting an environmental law conference at the Université de Moncton (UdeM) in February 2007 with the notable participation of Justice Michel Bastarache of the Supreme Court of Canada. The Conference had as its primary objective the furthering of a project that would see the creation of an environmental law clinic at the UdeM.
In September of 2007, the NBELS launched its Environmental Law Clinic but it was only briefly based at the Faculty of Law of the UdeM. The clinic was moved to a private law office in neighboring Dieppe in January 2008. The Clinic has two main goals. First, it offers pro-bono legal services to individuals and organizations. Second, it helps train law students and science students in the basic operations of a clinic and in environmental investigations. The Clinic counts on the participation of private lawyers to guide the students and to offer legal information to the Clinic's clients.
