About  [Edit]

CES Northwest is host for the Small Schools Project, a Gates Foundation funded initiative to support the development of small schools in Washington and around the country. Small schools are believed to be the strategy for reinventing public schools to succeed with all students. The Project provides:

- coaches for all of the schools in Washington with Gates Grants,

- resources on all aspects of small schools design,

- research on various aspects of the work,

- a website of information and resources.

The Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) is a network of schools and centers engaged in redesigning schools to raise student achievement. CES was created by Ted Sizer in 1984 to support his research on school reform presented in the trilogy: Horace's Compromise, Horace's School and Horace's Hope. CES schools share a commitment to a set of beliefs about whole school change called the Common Principles which emerged from Sizer's studies.
