About  [Edit]

Protecting the environment through law across borders. Hundreds of grassroots lawyers and scientists around the world call on the E-LAW network for legal and scientific tools, resources and advice.

The E-LAW Network

The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide [E-LAW] gives public interest lawyers and scientists around the world the skills and resources they need to protect the environment through law. Grassroots lawyers from 10 countries founded E-LAW in 1989. Now, more than 300 grassroots lawyers and scientists in 60 countries call on the E-LAW network for critical legal and scientific tools.

E-LAW advocates serve low-income communities around the world, helping citizens strengthen and enforce laws to protect themselves and their communities from toxic pollution and environmental degradation. E-LAW advocates are building a sustainable future by helping citizens participate in decisions about the environment. By giving grassroots advocates access to critical legal and scientific resources, E-LAW strengthens these advocates to challenge environmental abuses and pursue environmental justice.

E-LAW U.S.

E-LAW U.S. plays a critical role in the worldwide E-LAW network. E-LAW U.S. helps build and strengthen the network and gives public interest lawyers and scientists around the world the skills and resources they need to protect the environment through law.

Grassroots environmental lawyers and scientists face enormous hurdles. In many countries, environmental laws are weak or are not enforced. Government agencies make decisions about the environment without giving citizens an opportunity to participate in those decisions. Advocates for the environment do not have access to the scientific information they need to make the case for the environment. Grassroots lawyers often work in isolation and cannot obtain information about legal tools to protect the environment. Many citizens want to build a sustainable future, but grassroots advocates lack the skills and resources to make their case.

E-LAW U.S. works to even the odds. E-LAW U.S. helps grassroots advocates gain the skills and legal and scientific resources they need to challenge environmental abuses. Advocates call on E-LAW U.S. for model statutes and regulations, information about polluters, and court decisions that protect the environment. They also obtain information about the scientific questions that are at the heart of environmental challenges, including identifying the health risks of pesticides, providing model habitat restoration plans, and providing information about the best available technology to reduce industrial pollution.

In addition to giving local advocates the legal and scientific tools they need, E-LAW U.S.:

* Strengthens organizations, provides equipment, and builds skills

E-LAW U.S. helps advocates launch and strengthen organizations dedicated to protecting the environment through law. E-LAW U.S. Technology Circuit Riders equip environmental defenders with computers, software and networking equipment, and train them to use technology efficiently to access information and promote their work.

* Hosts visiting fellows

E-LAW U.S. has hosted nearly 100 visiting fellows in Eugene, where they study U.S. environmental laws, build skills, and gain access to tools and resources.

* Reaches out to more advocates

E-LAW started with 10 lawyers in 1989 and has grown to serve more than 300 lawyers in 60 countries.

* Builds networks

As E-LAW has demonstrated the power of networking, advocates have called on E-LAW U.S. to help build national and regional networks of environmental lawyers.

* Protects the human rights of public interest lawyers

Public interest lawyers often face serious risks when they challenge plans to exploit resources. E-LAW advocates call on their colleagues through the E-LAW network to help defend their human rights.

E-LAW has proven itself a powerful force in protecting the global environment. In 2004, leading environmental defenders from around the world will call on E-LAW U.S. for help protecting the environment through law. In each of these projects, E-LAW U.S. will help local advocates strengthen environmental laws and enforce existing laws. In the process, E-LAW U.S. will help build a worldwide corps of skilled, committed advocates working to defend the environment and build a sustainable future.
