About  [Edit]

La'akea Community  is a 23+ acre intentional community and permaculture demonstration site located 4 miles from the town of Pahoa.  La'akea Community began in 2005 when a group of people purchased La'akea Gardens, a site with a 15 year history of teaching permaculture. There are now 7 members with openings for more.

La'akea Community seeks to steward the land and continue the tradition of teaching permaculture while exploring other aspects of sustainability, such as interpersonal growth and the healing and creative arts.

La’akea LLC offers 28 day internships 4 times a year. These group immersions offer classroom and hands-on learning in permaculture practices and community living skills. Learn more at:  http://www.permaculture-hawaii.com/internapply.html

For those who are already skilled in farming, building, and off grid life, La'akea offers a work exchange program. This is a more informal way to be part of the community, contribute needed skills, and help steward the land. Read about it here: http://www.permaculture-hawaii.com/w.e.apply.html

Both work exchangers and interns gain experience in sustainable food production, managing orchards, gardens, and greenhouses, harvesting bamboo and other timber crops. There is the possibility of working on landscape design and renewable energy projects. In addition, everyone does their share of meal shifts, is part of a weekly cleaning party, and is invited to community meetings twice per week.
