The Latin American and Caribbean Fire Learning Network provides a framework for restoration and maintenance of ecologically appropriate fire regimes in fire-adapted and fire-sensitive ecosystems of the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and parts of South America. The goals of this rapidly growing Network are to:
-
Educate land managers about the ecological role of fire in tropical and temperate ecosystems,
- Help land managers develop comprehensive fire management planning and implementation skills, and
- Provide a framework for sharing and disseminating scientific knowledge and technical information.
Most Network participants are from Spanish-speaking countries, and the majority of Network workshops are conducted in Spanish.
A key network
objective is the development and implementation of comprehensive fire
management plans at demonstration sites, including the Rio Bravo
Conservation and Management Area in Belize, El Ocote Biosphere Reserve,
and La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve, both in Mexico. Critical learning,
best practices, and effective tools and techniques are transferred to
other priority conservation areas in the network through workshops,
site-based consultations, and mentoring exchanges. The network is
currently active in 11 countries:
• Bahamas
• Mexico
• Belize
• Cuba
• Dominican Republic
• Guatemala
• Honduras
• Costa Rica
• Panama
• Peru
• Paraguay
Information about previous workshops is available.
The Latin American and Caribbean Fire Learning Network is sponsored and funded by The Nature Conservancy's Global Fire Initiative and USDA Forest Service International Programs.
