Background: "A voice for the oppressed, a mission against injustice." This is the motto of Adhikar Trust, a human rights organization which provides legal assistance and promotes awareness among the people. It was founded during the martial law period in Bangladesh by Rezaur Rahman, a noted human rights lawyer.
Objectives: It has the following objectives: [1] to educate the people about their legal rights and duties; [2] to protect human rights; [3] to protect the rule of law; [4] to create mass awareness for prevention of crime; [5] to take active steps to prevent and eliminate corruption and slackness from the process of enforcement of law and prevention of crime; and [7] to conduct research on efficiency and usefulness of laws.
Activities: Adhikar Trust is involved in the following programs and activities: [1] Legal Aid: provides legal assistance to the underprivileged; [2] Creation of Awareness: disseminates information on laws and creates social resistance against violation of human rights; [3] Youth Power Project: mobilizes the youth against crime and injustices and drugs; and [4] Research on Laws: conducts researches and submits recommendations to the government on the Family Court Ordinance, Extradition Act and Criminal Procedure Code.
