THE PROBLEM
The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) in an effort to eradicate the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM), will start aerial spraying over Marin on August 1, 2008, and it will continue for several years.
- The pesticide CDFA proposes to use is a new formulation of CheckMate™ and will likely include as yet undisclosed chemicals that will be encased in microscopic plastic capsules. The aerially sprayed pesticide will drift in the wind and be inhaled by people.
- There have been no independent studies to determine either the short or long term health or environmental effects of CheckMate on the general population or any other species.
- From September through November 2007, citizens of the Monterey Bay communities were sprayed. They were assured there would be no adverse health impacts and yet hundreds of people in Santa Cruz and Monterey reported illnesses.
