About [Edit]
Our vision and mission
Tides Canada Foundation actively promotes change towards social and environmental well-being that is founded on the principles of:
* Social justice
* Broadly shared economic opportunity
* Robust, inclusive and participatory democratic process
* Farsighted environmental stewardship
We believe that healthy societies rely fundamentally on respect for human rights, cultural diversity, and the vitality of communities. We are committed to respecting and protecting our natural and environmental legacy that sustains the quality of rural and urban life. Canada`s abundant wilderness creates a special opportunity for the Foundation to promote habitat protection and biodiversity.
We envision, and aim to contribute to, social change philanthropy that strengthens the public commons and enhances public goods, both indispensable cornerstones for shifting our communities towards an equitable world and a life-supporting ecology.
Our History
Tides Canada Foundation began its operations in the fall of 2000 through the efforts of a group of visionary leaders in the field of environmental and social justice philanthropy. The impetus: donor support for these urgent issue areas was not growing significantly. Tides Canada`s founding board committed itself to giving life to a national, public foundation dedicated to expanding the donor community for environmental and social justice causes across Canada.
Since 2000, Tides Canada has grown to be a recognized leader in social change philanthropy, supporting the giving goals of over 75 donor partners. As of the end of 2004, Tides Canada has made over 900 grants totaling over $15 million to environmental and social justice charities.
While Tides Canada is an independent entity, it has drawn on the expertise of an international family of philanthropic organizations. Tides Canada`s sister organization, Tides Foundation has an impressive 25-year history of progressive change philanthropy in the United States. In 2004, Tides Foundation granted over $70 million USD, and managed over 360 donor-advised funds.
The "Tides" name honours a San Francisco-area independent bookstore that once served as a meeting place for readers, writers and activists, and continues to suggest the remarkable power derived from people and ideas coming together at the right time in the right place.
